Azorean Noctule Bat
|
Scientific Name Nyctalus azoreum
Description This bat is the only mammal endemic to the archipelago. It is the smallest species of Nyctalus in Europe, with a body length of 54 mm and tail length 35 mm. Fur is generally very dark, with a slightly lighter ventral region. This is one of the few bat species worldwide that are highly active during the day, probably due to the absence of predators. Its distribution is restricted to the central and eastern groups of the archipelago, although it is uncommon on the island of Santa Maria. Currently, is classified as Endangered by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals and its populations are declining. The geographical isolation of this species is one of the main threats to its survival, making it more sensitive both to natural disasters and to other threats such as disturbance of colonies or destruction of shelters.
Taxonomic Status Endemic to the Azores
