Scientific Name Gallinago gallinago gallinago
Description Ground nesting in high meadows. Feeds on worms and insects. Body size is similar to a Common blackbird and plumage is brown with white under parts. Has a long beak, somewhat disproportionate, of around 7 cm, a short tail and long, pointed wings. The Peatlands of the Planalto dos Graminhais are the only place in São Miguel island where this species breeds and there are only 3-5 breeding pairs.
Taxonomic Status The Azorean birds belong to a nominal subspecies which breeds on continental Europe.
Phenological Status Resident/Overwinters
Conservation Status Classified as Data Deficient on the archipelago of the Azores in the Red Book of Vertebrates of Portugal. At the European level, classified as category SPEC 3, since European populations in general have exhibited a slight decrease in recent years.
