Peat lands are priority habitats because, in addition to their rarity and biodiversity, they are fundamental for guaranteeing the water resources of the region.
The Peat lands of Planalto dos Graminhais extend over around 100 ha, but some areas are already degraded by exotic invasive species, namely Chilean Rhubarb (Gunnera tinctoria), Lilly-of-the-Valley Tree (Clethra arborea) and Tree Fern (Sphaeropteris cooperi).
For the municipalities of Nordeste and Povoação, the conservation of this habitat is vital for the quality of life of the population, since it guarantees the quality and quantity of water in this area. Therefore, invasive species are being eradicated and native plants reintroduced, thus improving the quality of the habitat and ensuring its effective ecological function.
