Scientific Name Passer domesticus
Description Breeds mostly in residential areas, walls, ruins, among others. A little smaller than the “Priolo”. Plumage of the males is streaked brown and black, the crown is grey; throat and part of breast are black; belly is white; beak is brown, strong and short; legs are pinkish. Females are a lighter brown and upper parts are more uniform; beak is yellowish.
Taxonomic Status Exotic species, originally from Europe, introduced/ escaped from captivity in the 1960’s.
Phenological Status Resident
Conservation Status The species is not listed in the Red Book of Vertebrates of Portugal. At the European level, classified as SPEC 3 In Decline reflecting the recent decrease in numbers seen in some countries.
