Scientific Name Asio otus otus
Description Breeds in small woods, parks and urban gardens. Although the silhouette and posture is very different it is a little bigger than a dove. Plumage of the upper parts is yellow to brown, sometimes finely streaked; throat, breast and belly a similar colour and pattern; head easily identifiable by ear tufts, reddish cheeks and orange eyes; beak is black and hooked, legs are yellowish-brown.
Taxonomic Status The Azorean birds are similar to the European subspecies.

Conservation Status Classified as Insufficient Information on the archipelago of the Azores in the Red Book of Vertebrates of Portugal. At the European level, classified as Not Threatened, with the situation considered Safe.
