Restoration of an area of Cryptomeria plantation
|
The conversion of around 10 ha of Cryptomeria forestry plantation back to natural forest was an experimental action with no precedents in the region. More than 30,000 plants of 11 different native species were planted, primarily those with an important role in the diet of the Azores Bullfinch: Azorean Blueberry (Vaccinium cylindraceum), Azorean Cherry (Prunus azorica) and Azorean Holly (Ilex perado spp. azorica). In addition to increasing the area of Laurel Forest habitat and food availability for the Azores Bullfinch, this action was a practical demonstration of the possibilities and problems that arise in the process of restoring degraded forest areas.
