The Casa do Povo of Maia and the municipality of Nordeste will revive the activity of milling wheat in ribeira do Caldeirões, in the morning of April 2nd.
The wheat comes from Maia, from Casa do Povo, and the municipality of Nordeste will provide the mill. The miller, who actually still works in the Caldeirões mills will be responsible for the task. Milling will start at 9:30 am and will take around an hour and a half.
This milling will be accompanied by the students of primary school from Maia and also from Lomba da Fazenda, although the activity is open to public and to anybody willing to know this practices that is long ago lost in the region.
The water mill in the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Park is the only active one in the island of São Miguel, operated by the last miller in this council.
Functioning of this mill has been the main attraction in the Ribeira dos Caldeirões park, where it coexist with another three mills and some old infrastructures that support the old milling activity, such as a pig stable, donkey's house, the cart for cereal transport, the agricultural equipment and other tools.
In order to allow the visitors to interprete the old uses of that park and the mills, the Nordeste municipallity put at visitors disposal an informative brochure with indication of all existing buildings and equipment.
Through this brochure, the visitor will also understand the mechanism of a water mill.
