“O avolumar do habitat” (Enlarging the Habitat) is the title of an exposition of the sculptures of German artist Volker Schnuttgen that the Horta Museum will inaugurate this Thursday at 15 hrs.
This exposition, which can be viewed in the exposition room of the Public Library and Regional Archive João José da Graça until the 28th of February, is made up of several wooden sculptures (poplar and hazel), eighteen Indian-ink paintings and monotypes inscribed in paper and cotton.
As a complement to this exposition, four impressive granite sculptures of public art will be presented from the 8th January until the 31st of March.
Born in Germany (1961), Volker Schnuttgen received his BA in Plastic Arts, at the University of the Arts, in Bremen. After graduating, he enrolled in the Virtual Modelling course, of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon.
In 2004 he received a scholarship from the prestigious Galouste Culbenkian Foundation that enabled him to attend the Screen Designer at Cimdata.de, in Berlin. In 2008, he completed a Master of Arts (MA) in Art and Multimedia, at the Fine Arts Faculty, of the University of Porto.
In 1989 he moved to Bremen and established his first atelier. Soon thereafter he represented his country in the event Germinations V – European Biennale of Young Artists in Lyon, Bona and Breda. From 1993 onwards he established a second atelier in Sintra.
Starting in 1992, he participated in approximately twenty individual and collective expositions in Germany, France, Spain, Holland, Norway and Portugal.
