Everything that is possible and necessary “is being done” to assure supply to the Western Group, guarantees Vasco Cordeiro

The President of the Government stressed today at the Legislative Assembly that "everything possible and necessary is being done" to assure the supply to the islands of Flores and Corvo, despite the disturbances caused by the total destruction of Lajes das Flores.

"Everything that can and needs to be done to mitigate the damage and the effects caused by the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo is being done," said Vasco Cordeiro. On the occasion, he noted that, in the face of the total destruction of Lajes das Flores breakwater and wharf, it is expected that disturbances and inconvenience should occur.

The President of the Government spoke at the Legislative Assembly following a Communication delivered by the Regional Government to the members of the Regional Assembly regarding the supply to the Western Group on the day when the vessel "Malena," chartered to supply Flores, docked on this island.

"The Regional Government, from the very first hour and to this day - and beyond today - follows closely and carefully the consequences of the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo on Flores and Corvo as well as on other islands," assured Vasco Cordeiro.

Since December 13, the island of Flores has received about 30 tonnes of different types of cargo by air and sea, also with the support of the Armed Forces, while Corvo has been supplied with about seven tonnes of goods by air since December 5.

In his speech, Vasco Cordeiro also noted that, now that the docking capacity of the vessel "Malena" has been tested on Flores, the island of Corvo can be supplied again from that island, thus resuming the logistic routes that were operational before the passage of Hurricane Lorenzo.

The passage of this hurricane through the Azores in early October caused losses estimated at about 330 million Euros, notably the destruction of Lajes das Flores port, whose recovery is estimated at around 190 million Euros. This intervention will encompass provisional protection measures for port operations, already under tendering procedures launched by the company Portos dos Açores.
