Ordinance to support Azorean fishers comes into force Wednesday, announces Vasco Cordeiro
The President of the Government announced the entry into force of an Ordinance providing Azorean with the support to ensure that their vessels have the conditions in terms of safety, work, operation and habitability as well as in terms of packaging and storage of fish on board.
"The new Ordinance was published today and comes into effect Wednesday. It follows the conclusions presented by the Working Group on the Restructuring of the Fisheries Sector in its report that are now made available to fishers," said Vasco Cordeiro.
The President of the Government spoke to journalists after a meeting with the Santa Maria's associations and fishers that was held on the second day of the Government's statutory visit to that island.
Vasco Cordeiro stressed that Ordinance no. 76/2016 will allocate support to regional fishers, like those already established in a previous Order, but that was not currently in force.
It should be noted that the document neither intends to increase the fishing effort nor exceed the current limits of power and tonnage of the regional fleet.
With this new measure, support is available for investments in the modernisation of vessels so that they may have better safety, operating and habitability conditions as well as the necessary conditions for fish packaging on board.
Moreover, it also intends to support the purchase of equipment to improve the safety of vessels and the use of fishing gear that allow the development of alternative fisheries.
