Vasco Cordeiro acknowledges contribution of elderly citizens to the development of the Azores
The President of the Government expressed today his public acknowledgement for the contribution provided by elderly citizens to the development of the Azores, assuring that the Regional Government will continue to promote, within the reach of its powers and resources, social measures and policies in this area.
"This recognition is an act of justice towards our elders for their hard work and contribution to our land," said Vasco Cordeiro. The President of the Government spoke during a gathering with sixty seniors from São Miguel that was organised "Casa do Povo" of Maia.
Public authorities have the obligation to express, within the reach of their resources and their powers, this recognition in a concrete and practical form, Vasco Cordeiro defended, ensuring that this commitment is taken by the Regional Government when it supports the construction of infrastructures to serve the elderly throughout the archipelago.
The Government's commitment is not limited to the investments in works, the President of the Government assured, stressing other social measures, such as the case of the Regional Pension Supplement.
“This support measure directed to the elderly living in the Region represents an annual investment of 25 million Euros," stressed Vasco Cordeiro during the meeting that gathered that users from 30 institutions across the island of São Miguel.
Vasco Cordeiro stressed that everyone is "aware of the moment we live in and the challenges that still lie ahead of us." According to him, the "important lesson to be learned from the path we have followed as Azorean people is that the will to learn and overcome difficulties have allowed us to win challenges and will also help us overcoming the times we live in."
