Vasco Cordeiro announces solution for houses located in Santa Maria Airport neighbourhoods
The Council of Government, which met Monday in Vila do Porto, approved the purchase conditions and other solutions for the houses located in the neighbourhoods of Santa Maria Airport. Vasco Cordeiro noted that, in this process, the Government privileged the right to housing of families residing in the area.
"The Council of the Government concluded a process of great importance and concerns the fate of the houses located in the airport public domain that was transferred from the State to the Autonomous Region of the Azores," said the President of the Government on the second day of the statutory visit to Santa Maria.
Vasco Cordeiro stressed that the Regional Government's approach to this subject privileged the right to housing of families residing in these neighbourhoods, who will now have different solutions such as the purchase of houses, leasing with purchase option and leasing.
"As the Government of the Azores awarded priority status to the housing rights of people who live there, this means that none of these solutions put those puts families in a less favourable than their current situation," assured Vasco Cordeiro.
According to the President of the Government, we have created the conditions so that these families may have the possibility to own their houses, if they wish so, through the creation of a subsidy mechanism that can go up to 75 percent of the house value.
Vasco Cordeiro spoke at the awarding ceremony of the contract work for the conclusion of Outeiro Neighbourhood. It also included the signing of a protocol with Santa Maria Madalena Shelter and the authorisation of six cases of support for housing recovery, a total public investment of about 250 thousand Euros.
In his speech, the President of the Government reiterated that the support is not a bonus, but the result of the taxes paid by all Azores, including Santa Maria islanders. In this context, the Regional Government is responsible for directing funds to this area.
Vasco Cordeiro stressed also that, since the end of 2012, the Government has invested nearly 60 million Euros in housing, with the allocation of support to 4,500 families throughout the Region.
