The President of the Government invited today the Permanent Specialised Committee on General Policy of the Legislative Assembly for a meeting to assess of the current situation of Lajes Air Base process.
The invitation of Vasco Cordeiro for a meeting at a mutually convenient date was formalised in a letter to the President of the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores, Ana Luísa Luís.
This will be the third time that the President of the Government meets with the members of the Committee on General Policy to discuss the Lajes Air Base process after the meetings in January 2016 and May 2014.
In the letter sent today, Vasco Cordeiro stressed that the "situation created by the U.S. Air Force to reduce its military presence at Lajes Air Base continues to bring out some aspects that are of utmost importance to know, monitor and take a position about them."
"This is what the Regional Government has made, through me, defending the interests of the Azores in this matter, either with the Permanent Bilateral Commission and the various support structures of the Agreement on Cooperation and Defence between Portugal and the United States of America, or even in any other circumstance when is necessary," says the letter.
According to Vasco Cordeiro, the meetings with the Committee on General Policy that took place in the previous legislative period were an "additional opportunity, in addition to the plenary sessions, to exchange views" with the members of the Regional Parliament that make this body.
