Vasco Cordeiro makes positive assessment of celebrations of Portugal Day in the Azores and the USA
The President of the Government made a very positive assessment of the celebrations of the Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities, presided over by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, which took place in the Azores and the United States of America.
Vasco Cordeiro spoke to journalists in the United States last Sunday after attending the Portugal Day celebrations. The event included the National Flag Hoisting Ceremony in Boston as well as the WaterFire Festival and a Portuguese "Arraial" (traditional festivities) in Providence.
"I make a very positive assessment of these celebrations, for what they represent in bringing the Azores closer to the communities in New England and, more specifically, in the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island," said the President of the Government.
After stressing that it is always a pleasure to share these moments with Azorean communities, Vasco Cordeiro stated that both the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister, in their speeches delivered during the celebrations, "have also highlighted the role played by the Azores in extending and strengthening the Portuguese presence in the United States of America."
On Monday, the President of the Government accompanies the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in the solemn celebrations of Portugal Day at the State House of Massachusetts, later visiting the ship "NRP Sagres." The celebration programme ends with a visit to the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
