Forestry services produce 25 thousand trout specimens per year to restock rivers and lakes
The Regional Director for Forestry revealed in Furnas that forestry services annually produce about 15 thousand trout specimens on São Miguel and 10 thousand on Flores to restock rivers and lakes.
Anabela Isidoro spoke on the sidelines of a presentation on "Trout Production and Trout farming" by the expert António Ferreira Borges that took place at Furnas Agricultural Station. The event was attended by 13 Aquaculture students of the University of the Azores.
As an entity responsible for the management of fish species in inland waters, the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources ensures the promotion of trout recreational fishing through annual restocking with fish bred in the aquaculture stations of Furnas Recreational Forest Reserve on São Miguel and Luís Paulo Camacho Forest Reserve on Flores.
Recreational fishing in the archipelago's inland waters is an important component in terms of activities related to the exploration of natural resources.
This type of fishing is solely practiced on São Miguel and Flores, the only islands that have lakes and rivers with the necessary conditions for the maintenance and fishing of species.
The Regional Directorate for Forest Resources issues on average 500 fishing licenses for recreational fishing in inland waters each year, registering an increasing demand from foreign tourists.
On the island of São Miguel, trout fishing may be carried out in Alegria, Limos, Bispos, Moinhos, Guilherme, Praia, Grande and Salga streams, and on Lagoa do Fogo lake.
On the island Flowers, trout fishing is allowed in Moinhos, Além Fazenda, Fazenda, Silva, Urzela and Grande streams, and on Lomba Lake.
