The Regional Director for Forest Resources stated in Vila do Porto that the works to be carried out his year in Fundo rural road on Santa Maria, an investment of 450 thousand Euros, will improve accessibility to farms and boost farmers' income.
"The contract work for Fundo rural road, with an extension of one kilometre, will improve accessibility to eight farms, covering an area of about 30 kilometres of pastures," said Anabela Isidoro, who during the presentation of the project.
In addition to paving the road with bituminous concrete, the works also includes the improvement of the drainage network in order to provide a more efficient rainwater drainage system.
The Regional Director pointed out that this road represents a peripheral alternative to the centre of Vila do Porto. It currently has some problems, especially after rainy weather, which will be solved with this intervention.
Anabela Isidoro mentioned that this work falls within the policies pursued by the Regional Government to reinforce agricultural support infrastructures. According to her, they "contribute to the competitiveness of regional production by reducing operating costs as well as by improving working and safety conditions of farmers."
The network of rural roads on the island of Santa Maria has stretches over 82 kilometres.
