Angra do Heroísmo ,  August 28, 2020

There are 140 certified organic producers in the Azores, says João Ponte

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Forestry stated on the island of Terceira that organic farming is on the right track in the Azores. This is evidenced by a set of indicators that show the development of this mode of production, which potential for growth and value creation in the Region.

“In the current legislative period, we have managed to take important steps in the development of organic production, as we have more area and more producers dedicated to this type of agricultural production, evidencing that we are following a path with future,” said João Ponte. According to him, there are currently 140 certified organic producers exploring an area of 1,240 hectares in the Azores.

The government official spoke at the end of a meeting with the Board of Bio Azórica - Agricultural Cooperative of Organic Products in Angra do Heroísmo. On the occasion, he pointed out that there are several organic farming projects under way in the Region, both in the area of agricultural diversification and in traditional areas such as milk and meat production, which are expected to be “very successful” projects.

The Regional Secretary stressed that the Strategy for the Development of Organic Farming has been defined, approved and is already being implemented in the current legislative period. It aims, among other aspects, to seize the existing potential in the Region and the opportunities that this mode of production may create.

For João Ponte, it is also important to highlight the fact that the Azores have producers' organisations with exclusive knowledge on organic production, such as Bio Azórica and TRYBIO, which, as a result of their dynamics and commitment, have been active agents in the development of this sector. In this regard, he also noted the investment that has been made in terms of large-scale distribution, through the creation of exclusive areas for the sale of organic products to meet the growing demand from consumers.

Under the POSEI programme, several changes have also been introduced over the course of the legislative period which, according to João Ponte, have made it possible to increase the aid to organic farming or conversion production.

Despite the path followed, João Ponte considered that there are important challenges to be overcome in the future. They necessarily involve a continuous growth in terms of area, number of producers and organic productions, given the relevance of this mode of production from the standpoint of environmental sustainability, health and production enhancement, as well as the need to meet the targets set by the European Commission for this area.

“We must continue the good work that has been done to align our action with European strategies, such as "From the Meadow to the Plate" and "Biodiversity 2030," whose primarily goal is to have 25% of agricultural areas in organic production mode,” said João Ponte.
