Fall River ,  February 18, 2020

Azorean manifestations in the diaspora enhance knowledge of the archipelago, says Regional Director for the Communities

The Regional Director for the Communities stated in the United States of America that the Azorean manifestations in the diaspora are "opportunities" to enhance the knowledge of the archipelago in different societies, highlighting the support they have received from the Regional Government.

"The recognition of our community here is also achieved by the way it integrates and interacts with the host society," said Paulo Teves, who spoke Monday in Fall River at a meeting with the new organising committee of the Great Feast of the Holy Spirit of New England.

For the Regional Director, “one cannot ignore the dynamics of the diaspora and the diversity of people that this relevant manifestation of the Azorean People is able to reach every year in the city of Fall River."

"Among successive generations, we must find the best ways to bring what they can relate to, combining the most genuine expressions of our culture but also showing what is being done in the archipelago," stressed the government official.

According to him, "it is good to note that this new committee, continuing the work carried out in the last three decades, is focused on adapting the celebrations to new areas and to wider audiences, thus creating a greater space for the dissemination of the Autonomous Region of the Azores with partnership of the Azorean Government."

in 1986, the Great Feast of the Holy Spirit of New England, whose committee is currently chaired by Duarte Câmara, a native of Capelas, brings together thousands of people every year to the city of Fall River not only in the state of Massachusetts, but also emigrants and Azorean descendants from other states, Canada and Bermuda.

For almost a week, Kennedy Park becomes the main stage for the celebrations of one of the greatest manifestations of the Azorean people's identity.

Also, on Monday, Paulo Teves presented the "Azoreans in the World” platform at the House of the Azores of New England in Fall River, Massachusetts, and at the Friends of Terceira Community Centre in Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

During this visit to the Azorean communities in the USA, Paulo Teves opens today the exhibition titled "Seeing the Archipelago: A Student Exhibition of Photographs of the Azores Islands" at Moloney Hall, University of Massachusetts - Lowell.
