Azores distinguished for the third consecutive time as one of the 100 Most Sustainable Destinations in the World
The Regional Secretary for Energy, Environment and Tourism expressed the Regional Government's great satisfaction with the fact that the Azores were selected for the third consecutive time as one of the "100 Most Sustainable Destinations in the World" by Green Destinations.
"These distinctions, awarded to the Azores on a regular basis, confirm the commitment of the Region in favour of environmental and economic sustainability and in defence of nature tourism. They strengthen and differentiate us internationally as a tourist destination," said Marta Guerreiro.
The Secretary for Tourism pointed out that the archipelago's application to all editions was submitted by the Azores Geopark, in collaboration with the Azores Tourism Association. For three consecutive times, the Azores were included in the list of the 100 Most Sustainable Destinations."
Organised by Green Destinations in partnership with 20 other international sustainable tourism organisations, this competition was created in 2014 to distinguish and highlight successful examples of tourism destination management as well as to promote the exchange of good environmental practices. The selection of the destinations involves the formal appointment by the ambassadors of each destination and the evaluation by a panel of about 100 international experts.
The list of nominees for 2017 will be formally announced in Cascais on Thursday, September 28, during "Greenfest," one of the largest sustainable development events in the world.
