The Regional Directorate for Culture promotes the 3rd Regional Whaling Boat Championship between July 13 and 15, which will take place for the first time on the island Terceira, more specifically in São Mateus da Calheta.
Teams from the islands of Santa Maria, São Miguel, Terceira, Graciosa, Pico, Faial and Flores will be in competition, making up a total of 160 participants and 13 whaling boats, in addition to three support boats. The championship comprises the sailing and rowing categories
This third edition of the championship takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, featuring men's and women's rowing competitions from 10 AM to 12 PM and sailing competitions starting at 2 PM in nine races.
On Saturday, July 14, there will also be a bullfighting at the São Mateus fishing Ports as well as a musical event.
With the joint organisation of the Regional Directorate for Culture, the Regional Whaling Heritage Advisory Commission and the Village Council of São Mateus da Calheta and the support Angra do Heroísmo City Council, this cultural and sporting event intends to pay tribute and revive the whaling tradition in the Azores.
