The Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, under the administration of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, participate in the 88th Lisbon Book Fair. The initiative is promoted the by Portuguese Association of Publishers and Bookseller and will take place at Eduardo VII Park from May 25 to June 13.
The participation of the Azores is primarily intended to disseminate works by Azorean authors or that address Azorean themes. In this context, the Azores Culture Pavilion will feature the following publishing entities: Regional Directorate for Culture; Amigos dos Açores Ecological Association; Montanheiros Association; Municipal Councils of Horta, Angra do Heroísmo, Santa Cruz da Graciosa, Velas and Lajes das Flores; Carla Lopes Gomes; Regional Support Centre for Handicrafts; Companhia das Ilhas, Lda.; Fernando António Pimentel and Geotrota Unipessoal, Lda.
Furthermore the following entities will also be represented at the Azores Culture Pavilion: Azorean Institute of Culture; Cultural Institute of Ponta Delgada; Historical Institute of Terceira Island; João António Gomes Vieira; Jorge Barros – Produções Audiovisuais, Lda.; Horta Cultural Centre; OMA - Azores Sea Observatory; Publiçor; Afonso Chaves Society; Turiscom – Turismo e Comércio, Lda.; University of the Azores; Ver Açor and Yolanda Corsépius.
At the Azores Culture Pavilion, the 775 work titles available, corresponding to more than 2,280 books by the featured publishers, and the publications from the Regional Directorate for Culture, may be purchased, as usual, with at discounts of 20% and 30%, respectively.
In addition to this significant decrease in the public sale price, the Azores Culture Pavilionwill select the "Book of the Day" on a daily basis as well as a book on sale; both have a 50% discount.
The "Book of the Day" and fair promotions will be extended to the Regional Directorate for Culture shops, the museums belonging to the Regional Network of Azorean Museums, Public Libraries and Regional Archives of Angra do Heroísmo, Ponta Delgada and Horta as well as to Arquipélago -Contemporary Arts Centre and the virtual bookshop.
The selected works for "Book of the Day" are as follows: the most recent edition of "Emanuel Félix - Obra Completa" (three volumes), organised by Vasco Pereira da Costa; the album "A Fotografia nos Açores" by Carlos Enes; the essay "A Baleação e o Estado Novo. Industrialização e organização corporativa (1937-1958)" by Francisco Maia Henriques, distinguished with an Honorable Mention in the 2014 edition of the "Daniel de Sá "Humanities Prize and the catalogue "José Nuno da Câmara Pereira – Um Sísifo Feliz." The latter revisits the retrospective exhibition of this Santa Maria-born artist, an initiative organised in 2016 by the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, and curated by José Luís Porfírio.
Besides the sale of works with significant discounts, the Azores Culture Pavilion also promotes, under this year's cultural programming, book launch and autograph sessions. On May 25, it will host the presentation of the third volume of the work "José Enes – Obra Poética" by Fernanda Enes at the APEL Auditorium at 7 PM.
On June 1, there will be two autograph sessions. The first session with Susana Rodrigues, author of "Madrugada," is scheduled for 12 PM, while the second session with José L. Diniz, author of "Santa Maria – Momentos na Ilha dos Fósseis," is scheduled for 6:30 PM.
Also on June 1, the work entitled "Corpo Triplicado" by Maria Brandão will be launched at the Auditorium at 9 PM.
On the following day, Saturday, an autograph session will take place with Maria João Ruivo, author of Um Punhado de Areia nas Mãos," at 3 PM. In turn, the book entitled "A Alma da Nossa Gente" by Augusto Gomes will be launched at the Auditorium at 8 PM and, an hour later, the work "Álbum Micaelense" by José de Almeida Mello.
At the Pavilion, there will be an autograph session with Jorge Rebêlo, author of "Domingos Rebêlo - Pintura" on June 8 at 5 PM and with Conceição Cabral, author of "Saberes e Sabores dos Açores," on June 10 at 11 AM.
The Azores Culture Pavilion of the 88th Lisbon Book Fair may be visited from Monday to Thursday from 12:30 PM to 11 PM; Fridays from 12:30 PM to 12 AM; Saturdays from 11 AM to 12 AM; Sundays and holidays from 11 AM to 11 PM.
Technicians of the Regional Directorate ensure its operation for Culture with the collaboration of five Azorean students.
