The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, will hold another conference under the "Conferences at Boa Nova" cycle on the theme "100 years of Motorisation of the Portuguese Army" to take place at Manuel Coelho Baptista de Lima Military History Centre next Friday, November 16, at 8 PM.
In this lecture, Luís Afonso Costa will address the use of motor vehicles by the Portuguese Army over the last one hundred years, from the acquisition of the first vehicles in the early 20th century, through the Great War years, the 1930s and the beginning of the large-scale motorisation of many Army units.
The World War II and the subsequent acquisition of equipment for the defence of Portugal, the defence of the Atlantic islands and the colonies in Africa and the East will also be under analysis as well as the defence commitments made with NATO, the end of the colonial war and the use of vehicles in Africa.
Furthermore, Luís Costa will also address the new defence commitments made with NATO in the 1970s and 1980s, the new missions assigned to the Army in the 1990s and the beginning of the 21st century, where motor vehicles have been always present.
Luís Afonso Costa focuses his work on the historical research of the vehicles used by the Army. He is a founding partner of the Portuguese Association of Military Vehicles and collaborator of the Military Museum of Elvas in the area of restoration, conservation and dissemination of the history of Portuguese military vehicles.
