The Ponta Delgada Public Library and Regional Archive opens today a documentary and book exhibition designated as "From enclosure to disclosure: the path of convent libraries and archives" to mark the National Day of Church's Cultural Heritage in partnership with Committee on Cultural Heritage of the Diocese of Angra do Heroísmo.
This event is also linked to the exhibition marking the Library's 170th anniversary insofar as convent libraries were the basis for the creation of public libraries.
The initiative aims to disseminate the history and path of convent libraries and archives after the abolition and extinction of religious orders in Portugal in 1832 and 1834, respectively, during the implementation of the liberal regime in Portugal, while highlighting their heritage and historical relevance.
These archives, as well as buildings and valuable religious artifacts, should also be regarded and treated as cultural and heritage assets of the Churchis history in Portugal.
The exhibition will be open to the public until January 3 from Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 7 PM and on Saturdays between 2 PM and 7 PM.
The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
