Regional Government promotes International Seminar on Underwater Archaeology in Angra do Heroísmo
The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, under the administration of the Regional Secretariat for Education and Culture, promotes an international seminar on underwater archaeology on April 5 and 6. The event is jointly organised with the Agency for the Development of Culture in the Azores.
This initiative will be held at the Angra do Heroísmo Cultural and Congress Centre and is open to all interested parties. It will feature the participation of speakers from the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, Cape Verde and Senegal.
This seminar arises from the 3rd Transnational Seminar held under the Margullar Project in the Canary Islands and Senegal, focusing on the theme of underwater archaeology and its role as a cultural and scientific asset of high tourist interest.
The Margullar project brings together partners from various regions of Macaronesia and is joined by Senegal. It has been approved and co-financed under the Community programme designated as INTERREG V-A MAC-Madeira, Azores and Canaries 2014/2020. The initiative has provided a significant contribution to the regions and countries involved in the approach to the importance of this theme.
The seminar will address several important issues: disseminating the archaeological methodology for the organisation of underwater interventions; establishing a basic methodology for the creation of an underwater archaeological route; addressing the problem of underwater research and means and proposing possible solutions; sharing similar experiences in other regions of Macaronesia and possible applications to the local territory.
