Avelino Meneses highlights importance of financial education in the training of citizens
The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture stated today that, only with "responsible citizens, it is possible to "properly manage" their own lives and "create the foundations for the progress towards the whole society."
Speaking to journalists at the end of the opening session of the training course "Benchmark for Financial Education," Avelino Meneses reiterated that, in addition scientists and professionals," the school play an active role in the training of citizens.
In this context, and because "responsibility is the main motto of citizenship," a training course on financial literacy training is regarded as "very important," added the Regional Secretary. He recalled that the Western world has been living since 2008 in a crisis that "has yet to disappear," whose culprits "were speculators and all of us, when we began running excessive risks in financial matters and abandoned common sense."
Hence, Avelino Meneses conveyed his belief that the training course will provide regional teachers with "essential knowledge" on the "rules of moderation and rationality in financial matters" to pass on to the future generations.
The training course "Benchmark for Financial Education" is an initiative of the National Council of Financial Supervisors in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Science, to which the Azores joined in 2011.
The training course that started today in Ponta Delgada involves the participation of fifty teachers from 32 Azorean schools and runs until Wednesday; it will also cover the island of Terceira on the following days.
With duration of 15 hours, the training course focuses on the contents and methodologies necessary for the implementation of financial education in educational and training context.
