In compliance with a parliamentary Resolution, the Government of the Azores has submitted to the Legislative Assembly a report on the safety and protection process of school buildings in the archipelago and their users.
The information available indicates that about 80 percent of Azorean schools have already approved their fire safety and risk prevention plans as well as the building safety and evacuation plans.
However, some schools are still in the process of preparing these plans or awaiting external assessment.
The network of Azorean schools was inspected by the competent authorities throughout 2016 regarding their safety plans in order to access their compliance with the Safety Regulations against Fires in school buildings.
The safety plans for schools are reviewed and approved by the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service.
The safety of school users is a major concern of the Government with regard to the management of the regional education system.
For the Government of the Azores, the compliance with the rules and procedures regarding fire safety and prevention of risk situations is of paramount importance as well as the existence of building safety and evacuation plans for schools and the training of school users for emergencies.
