The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture highlighted today the "mission" of teachers, emphasising their role as partners of the Government in the promotion of school success.
"All of you, if not the only, are the best partners of the Government in the fight against school failure," said Avelino Meneses. The government official spoke during the celebrations of the World Teachers' Day, an initiative of UNESCO that is celebrated today.
The greeting message addressed at teachers working in the Azores is available in video format in at the addresses: https://www.facebook.com/ProSucesso2015DRE and https://instagram.com/prosucessoazores/.
In this message, Avelino Meneses recalls the statement of the President of the Scientific Council for the Integrated Plan for the Promotion of School Success "ProSucesso – Azores for Education," who said that "there is nothing, absolutely nothing, that replaces a good teacher."
However, the Regional Secretary reiterated that the Regional Government will do everything to "give more confidence and ensure the stability of the profession."
"We will do everything so that the democratisation of education becomes synonymous with the recognition of the value of teachers," said the government official.
Avelino Meneses also mentioned that the fight against school failure is "a relentless struggle" that we have to endure so that "students do not leave their future in school and that they take their future from school."
"In education, whether in Portugal or the Azores, we always face the challenge of doing in a few years what Europe has done in many years"; therefore "we need the full commitment of all parties involved" because "the Government only plays a minor role," said the government official.
"The Government is responsible for providing the means and encouraging the school community to turn education into a true priority, because as someone said: 'man is nothing but what education makes of him,'" noted Avelino Meneses.
