Government assures monitoring of boats from Ponta Delgada fishing in Flores Island
The Regional Inspectorate of Fisheries (IRP) has apprehended 1,637 kilograms of fish and presented five legal notifications to two ships registered in Ponta Delgada that have used the port of Lajes, in Flores Island, as a storage facility for their fishing exploits around the island.
For the Government of Carlos César, the measures taken by IRP in this case demonstrate the commitment to guarantee that fishing activity conform to existing laws.
However, the Government recognises that there may be a need to expand the coastal protection-zones destined for the local fishermen of each island.
The solution for this problem, which is being prepared in conjunction with the Fishermen’s Associations and the University of the Azores, seeks the “protection of a mode of living and of a local culture” and insure non-intensive fishing around the islands so as to preserve profitability and fish stocks in the long-term. This will assure the sustainability of the sector.
The Government also envisions greater coordination and joint planning in the implementation of monitoring measures to be executed by the pertinent national state entities.
