Azorean Government moves forward with proposal for training of nurses on the islands without hospital
The Regional Secretary for Health analysed together with the President of the Health School of the University of the Azores in Angra do Heroísmo the proposal to extend nursing teaching to the islands without hospital with the aim of promoting the maintenance of professionals on these islands.
"This need arose from the fact that some of the nursing positions for these islands are not filled because there are no interested parties. We want to create a dynamics among students who are already at the clinical teaching phase, so that they may go to these islands while encouraging them to settle there in the future," stressed Rui Luis at the end of the meeting.
The Secretary for Health stated that he intends to implement this measure in the next school year insofar as the Health School and its departments in Angra do Heroísmo and Ponta Delgada welcomed the initiative.
"The Regional Secretariat for Health is willing to collaborate by subsiding travel, accommodation and meal expenses, possibly in collaboration with municipal councils, with the aim of encouraging the maintenance of these professionals on the islands without hospital," said the government official.
According to Rui Luís, the Government will soon carry out a survey on the training conditions of each health centre and ascertain the possibility of conducting a clinical supervision course in each health unit.
"We want to create the conditions to provide this enriching experience in a health centre, where there are, simultaneously, emergencies, inpatient care and continuing care," said the government official.
At the meeting, the training offer of the Health School was also under analysis taking into consideration the needs of the population and the Regional Health System.
"We launch the challenge of creating complementary training, namely at three levels: continuing care, palliative care and mental health care," said the Regional Secretary. In this regard, he added that this "training may take the shape of postgraduate courses, shorter refresher courses or even supplementary training courses for secondary school or vocational training students."
