Regional Government already invested nearly one million Euros to control termite infestations
The Regional Director for Housing stated in Angra do Heroísmo that the support allocated by the Regional Government to control termite infestations has already covered ninety families, an investment of about one million Euros.
"Among the requests submitted to the Regional Directorate for Housing to control termite infestations, about 60 percent come from the island of Terceira," said Orlando Goulart.
The Regional Director spoke on the sidelines of a ceremony authorising the allocation of support for the rehabilitation of degraded housing and the control of termite infestations, covering more than twenty families in the two municipalities of Terceira Island.
"The support allocated to families from 13 villages adds up to an investment of 355 thousand Euros, of which 103 thousand were awarded for the recovery of seven termite-infested properties," said Orlando Goulart.
Termite infestations are mostly reported in the urban centres of Ponta Delgada on S. Miguel Island and Angra do Heroísmo on Terceira Island.
In this context, the Regional Government "has implemented, since 2010, a support programme establishing measures to control and eradicate termite infestations as well as the legal scheme on the granting of financial support for the extermination of termites and the repair of buildings damaged by this pest."
According to Orlando Goulart, the Government has already allocated support amounting to 9.7 million Euros for the recovery of degraded housing in the current legislative period, covering 715 families.
"We have been carrying out these procedures throughout the archipelago over the years. It represents a continuous effort on the part of the Regional Government towards the improvement of housing conditions of the Azorean population, always bearing in mind the access to decent housing," said the Regional Director.
