Regional Government continues to improve regional road network, says Ana Cunha

The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works stated today that the Regional Government "has completed, since the beginning of this legislative term, interventions representing an investment of 15 million Euros in the regional road network, in addition to the multiannual investment in the toll-free roads. Currently, "there are investments amounting to 14 million Euros" in the tender phase.

"This is the commitment of the Regional Government: improve the living conditions of the Azoreans and promote interventions aimed at enhancing safety, always bearing in mind the improvement of comfort conditions and the safety of accessibility," stressed Ana Cunha. The government official spoke at the signing of the works contract for the remodelling of the intersection of Regional Road no.1-1 with the Foral Novo Road in Água de Pau, which took place as part of the Government's visit to São Miguel.

Ana Cunha stated that, in this specific case, "a significant improvement will be made in the west entrance to Água de Pau." In this regard, she considered that this intervention "will significantly improve the safety conditions of all those who use this road, whether going to school or work, in the case of those living here, or accessing sights of tourist interest, such as the case of Caloura."

"This intersection between the Regional Road and Foral Novo Road does not have the appropriate size and characteristics, namely for the so-called long vehicles, such as buses. These characteristics are incompatible with the safe manoeuvring of buses, leading to a momentarily decrease in road safety," added the government official.

The intervention to be carried out "is an important issue, considering that the access to Água de Pau Basic Education School is made by this intersection," recalled Ana Cunha. As she emphasised, "it has become imperative to improve the access to the school and turn it into two-way, road, removing traffic from the centre of the parish."

The works contract for the redevelopment of that area, which will remain a road junction, includes an intervention to ensure the adequate geometry and manoeuvring space as well as better visibility conditions.

The work, awarded to the company Marques, represents an investment of 400 thousand Euros and has a completion period of 90 days.
