Regional Government remains committed to conservation and maintenance of roads on all islands, says Ana Cunha
The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works stressed that the Regional Government must continue to set an example, "demonstrating its commitment to new road projects, even if they are of a smaller size, without ever forgetting that a road is not completed on the opening day as it requires us to take care of its conservation."
Ana Cunha spoke Tuesday at the Lajes Civil Airport, Terceira Island, at the signing of works contract for the resurfacing of the Airport Roundabout. On the occasion, she added, in this case, “another beginning of an important work of conservation and maintenance of already existing infrastructures that need to be improved and reorganised."
This works contract “will cover the resurfacing of the Airport Roundabout, the main gateway to the island of Terceira, hence we also point out its importance by providing this area with comfort and safety conditions,” said the Regional Secretary. According to her, this “is an investment of about 65 thousand Euros that has a relatively short completion period of 30 days.”
“In a month, we will return this space,” said the Regional Secretary. As she added, the Regional Government will continue to work “with different institutions, companies and the population, implementing other similar projects across the island, as we do throughout the Region."
“We do not live solely on roads.
We also have these small works, which mean a lot, especially in an area that serves as the gateway" to the island of Terceira, noted the government official.
This works contract covers an extension of 240 metres, including the full replacement of the pavement of the traffic lanes, the application of road surface markings and the installation of road signs.
As part of the Government's visit to Terceira, Ana Cunha was also attended the presentation of the project for the expansion and improvement of drainage system on Regional Road no.1-1 in Quatro Ribeiras.
This project will create the conditions for the diversion of rainwater, through surface and subsurface drainage devices, up to the nearest water line, about 75 metres away, thus significantly improving safety and comfort conditions in this area.
The intervention will be carried in a period of 90 days and represents an investment of more than 132 thousand Euros. For Ana Cunha, this work will "improve the rainwater drainage conditions in the centre of the parish, while the traffic lanes and respective footpaths will be resurfaced, among other interventions that we will carry out during this construction.
The Regional Secretary also visited the site of the remodelling works of Pico Celeiro viewpoint on the hillside of Serra do Cume Range, overlooking the city of Praia da Vitória and the airport.
This intervention, an investment of about 20 thousand Euros, includes the construction of a small wall in the viewpoint to delimit the access to the platform and the installation of a small staircase. The viewpoint platform will be placed at a constant level to allow the access of people with reduced mobility.
The parking area, adjacent to the road, will have two spaces for light vehicles and one for buses.
The Regional Secretary also visited the sites of the interventions taking place in Vila Nova and Fontinhas to learn about the progress of the works.
In Vila Nova, a retaining wall is being rebuilt in Canada do Boqueirão, an investment of more than 18 thousand Euros with a completion period of 30 days, while in Fontinhas a retaining wall is being built on the Regional Road no. 4-2, an investment of more than 12 thousand Euros.
Both interventions include the replacement of the retaining walls damaged by heavy rainfall.
