Santa Cruz da Graciosa ,  February 20, 2020

Regional Government takes permanent effort to develop the Azores, says Ana Cunha

The Regional Secretary for Transport and Public Works stated on the island of Graciosa that the Regional Government continues to "develop" the archipelago "in a constant effort."

For Ana Cunha, this is the mission that mobilises the Government to “work for all Azoreans, from Santa Maria to Corvo.”

The Secretary for Public Works spoke at the presentation of the redevelopment project for Largo 1.º de Dezembro square in the parish of Luz, stressing that "we being today the development of this work on the island Graciosa. This is another work that will achieve the Regional Government's goal of improving accessibility on public roads, the mobility conditions of the Azoreans and their quality of life", while promoting" the redevelopment of public spaces and the improvement of the safety conditions of the regional road network.”

With the work, we intend to “reorganise traffic, provide this space with parking spaces and footways, and redevelop the surrounding areas.” Ana Cunha said, adding that this intervention “will certainly promote a better use of this space in the most central area of the parish of Luz.”

The Regional Secretary stressed that the intervention aims to provide parish “with a qualified urban centre, while pursuing the reorganisation of traffic flows in the central area of this parish.”

"The main focus of the project is the creation of a small square, next to the fountain of the parish, restoring the relevance it had in the past without neglecting the architectural component," added the government official.

In fact, the square is intended to become "a multipurpose space without demarcated parking spaces," Ana Cunha said, adding that "part of the square will be used in day-to-day parking, also ensuring that it can be used in other ways by everyone on festive days.”

"The intervention will involve, above all, the remodelling of footways and the replacement of the existing ones, the placement of urban furniture and the improvement of lighting condition," revealed the Regional Secretary.

Ana Cunha reminded that “we are, through the use of the Region's resources, fulfilling one of the commitments made in the Programme of the XII Government: redevelopment of public infrastructures, maintaining the architectural heritage and providing all those living in this parish, or those visiting it, with the greatest possible comfort and safety conditions."

During the statutory visit to Graciosa, the Regional Secretary also visited the site where the redevelopment works of a section of the branch of Regional Road no. 1–2. The interventions will specifically focus on Rua do Ilhéu, where two pedestrian footpaths were implemented on both sides of the road, starting at the intersection to the Commercial Port and the intersection to Pinheiro.

This project ensures the maintenance of existing accesses, providing users with a specific route for outdoor and leisure activities.

It also included the remodelling of the walls surrounding the adjacent land with the aim of returning their original shape in stone masonry and an intervention in the intersection to the Commercial Port, with the creation of a roundabout and resurfacing works, as it an area where pavements are severely degraded.

Ana Cunha also visited the site where the redevelopment works of the intersection between the regional roads no. 3-2 and no. 2-2 were carried out, namely in the area of Canada Longa and Caminho de Cima, parish of São Mateus, through which the land was converted into a leisure area. The intervention included the construction of stone walls, the construction of a covered leisure area, a barbecue grill and the relocation of a fountain, also improving traffic and creating parking areas.

The Secretary for Public Works also visited the site where the redevelopment works of a section of Regional Road no. 3–2 are taking place, more specifically in Caminho da Igreja, parish of Guadalupe.

This contract work aims to respond to the high number of vehicles that have been registered in the areas close to Casa do Povo do Guadalupe (community centre) and Sport Clube Guadalupe. As these institutions are located along this section of the Regional Road, there is the need to increase and reorganise parking spaces, given the traffic congestion caused by flow of vehicles on this road.

The solution designed and now under way includes the widening of the road in the direction of Guadalupe - Santa Cruz, the construction of new dry stone boundary walls, and the creation of footways and longitudinal parking spaces.

The three contract works represent an investment of about 190 thousand Euros. They accomplish the Regional Government's goal of improving accessibility on public roads, the mobility conditions of the Azoreans and their quality of life," while promoting" the redevelopment of public spaces and the improvement of the safety conditions of the regional road network.”
