Avelino Meneses ensures that solution for Capelas Basic Education School will be "appropriate, convenient and safe"
The Regional Secretary for Education and Culture assured on S. Miguel that the solution for Capelas Basic Education School will be "appropriate, convenient and safe."
"I will ensure an appropriate, convenient and safe solution for Capelas School so that all buildings may comply with quality requirements in force for school facilities," said Avelino Meneses, who spoke Tuesday at a meeting with the local school community.
The intervention, whose technical preparations, namely in terms of budgeting, are already underway, will be "necessarily comprehensive," stressed the Secretary for Education. According to him, the future works include, besides the construction of a new block D, the removal ceilings with asbestos, the construction of covered passageways and the replacement of floors and tiles.
The works to be carried out will provide the new spaces with "appropriate conditions in terms of thermal and acoustic comfort as well as in terms of health and functionality, technology and increased safety," added the government official.
For the Regional Secretary for Education and Culture, who met, at his request, with a considerable number of students, parents, teachers and non-teaching staff, the solution to be implemented should ensure that, as in any other in the archipelago, "a conducive environment to the progress of learning because this is the Government's goal."
However, Avelino Meneses stressed that "the structural conditions, the advantages of implementing a commitment of years and the need for an efficient management" of resources determines the construction of a new building to replace the current block D, closed for safety reasons, and the rehabilitation of buildings and other school spaces.
On the other hand, the Regional Secretary announced the temporary closure of two workshops built at the same time as block D until the results of the tests conducted by the Regional Civil Engineering Laboratory (LREC) are known.
Students covered by this decision will be relocated to the Vocational Training School, similarly to what has happened with the closure of Block D on January 18, following a study conducted by LREC.
In this meeting with the school community of the Capelas Basic Education School, which lasted more than three hours, Avelino Meneses was accompanied by the Regional Director for Education, Fabíola Cardoso, and the Director of LREC, Francisco Fernandes.
