Regional Government refutes claims of fuel rationing on Corvo Island

The Regional Government informs that there is no rationing of fuel on the island of Corvo, and is currently monitoring the current fuel levels in the local market, through the Regional Cohesion and Economic Development Support Fund (FRACDE).

This monitoring guarantees that the island of Corvo has at its disposal the necessary fuel to ensure the daily lives of its inhabitants during the course of this week.

Following the expected worsening of weather conditions for the Central and Western group islands between today and Sunday, with forecasts predicting wind speeds of 60 to 70 km/hour and a significant wave height between 3 and 5.5 metres, the scheduled operation that would supply the island of Corvo this week with goods and fuel will be postponed to Monday, May 4.

This situation is, as always, assessed by the Regional Government, through FRACDE, in conjunction with the shipowner and the Maritime Authority with the goal of safeguarding the safety of the crew, cargo and the vessel throughout this operation.

Next week's transport operation will restore the storage capacity and fuel levels of local operators.

The implementation of a diesel reserve of 22 thousand litres on Corvo Island by FRACDE 15 years ago stemmed precisely from the need to guarantee fuel reserves for local operators, who use it whenever necessary to reinforce their storage capacity.

This reserve also ensures the availability of fuel at times when maritime supply is not possible.
Over the past 15 years, this infrastructure has prevented, at all times, fuel shortages on the island of Corvo.

Confirming the impossibility of supplying goods this week by sea, FRACDE will provide support to the air transport of food, starting today, within the mechanisms at its disposal, which will be available to entrepreneurs under the stipulated terms and conditions, as has been ensured in the post-hurricane Lorenzo period.
