Angra do Heroísmo ,  April 10, 2014

Azores celebrate International Day for Monuments and Sites

The Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, will join the celebrations of the International Day for Monuments and Sites which is annually celebrated on April 18. This year's celebrations will be held under the theme - "Places of Memory."

To celebrate the International Day for Monuments and Sites, the Carlos Machado Museum promotes today the presentation of a documentary titled "Pão" at Teatro Micaelense at 9:30 PM.

Written by André Laranjinha, the documentary was shot and produced on São Miguel this year. It is co-produced by the Carlos Machado Museum/Alice's House, following the documentaries that were previously produced by the museum on pilgrimages, water mills and traditional pig slaughtering.

The education workshop "Looking for cereals at the Museum" will take place at the Sacred Art Centre and Santa Bárbara Museum Centre on April 16 from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. The activity is addressed at children aged 5 and 12.

Under this workshop, which requires prior registration, participants will go on a trip through the museum, searching for references to bread and cereals. The workshop will be followed by an information session on wheat culture and a surprise activity.

The Angra do Heroísmo Museum will also join the celebrations by promoting the exhibition of a documentary "Documentário Terceirense" at the Chapter Room on April 12 at 3 PM.

This session is part of the activity "Travelling through Pictures," being an initiative organised under the exhibition programme of the "Património Mundial | do Mundo a Angra do Heroísmo" exhibition.

Directed by António Luís Lourenço da Costa in 1927 and presented for the first time in Angra do Heroísmo in the same year on the initiative of the company Foto-Cinema Açores, the "Documentário Terceirense" is considered to be the first Azorean film. It comprises a set of frames in which animated images seek to retain the life of the city: its figures and its people, and its stories.

In turn, the Horta Museum will organise a guided tour to its collections, followed by a pedestrian itinerary through the city' historic centre; the latter aims to the raise the awareness of younger generation for building heritage: its past and current uses, its vulnerability and the need to preserve it.

Addressed at children attending elementary and middle school in class context, this activity will take approximately 90 minutes and may be scheduled by schools at the museum facilities at a time that is more convenient to classes. This activity will be held from April 22 to 24.

On April 21, the Pico Museum organise the initiative "An Adventure at the Wine Museum" to be held at the museum's premises. It will include a paper chase activity on several aspects on wine production that is addressed at an 8th form class from Cardeal Costa Nunes Basic Education and Secondary School in Madalena.

The Graciosa Museum promotes a photography exhibition titled "O Tabaco" by Marcelo Borges at Graciosa Basic Education and Secondary School on April 18.
The exhibition will be open to the public at the Graciosa Museum until April 30.

The celebration of the International Day for Monuments and Sites aims to raise the awareness of different audiences for the diversity and richness of heritage as well as for the nee for its protection and preservation.
