President of the Government participates in international conference on climate and renewable energies
The President of the Government, Vasco Cordeiro, will speak on Thursday at the international conference promoted by "R20 - Regions of Climate Action," a non-profit organisation in cooperation with the United Nations.
Vasco Cordeiro will present a paper under the panel "Empowering Regions to Implement New Energy Solutions" within the conference "Implementing the Future of Sustainable Energy" to take place in Vienna, Austria.
The Autonomous Region of the Azores is one of the founding members of "R20," having signed the constitutional charter of this organisation at the Governors' Global Climate Summit held in California in 2010. This entity was created with the aim of mitigating the effects of climate change and promoting actions that contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.
This initiative will also count on participation of the President of the EU Commission, José Manuel Barroso, the Federal Chancellor of Austria, Werner Faymann, Prime Minister of Romania, Victor Ponta, and the former Governor of California and founder of "R20", Arnold Schwarzenegger, among other personalities from the political, academic and international business areas.
Headquartered in Switzerland, the "R20" organisation brings together about 560 local and regional governments from around the world as well as companies, financial and academic institutions, non-governmental organisations and the United Nations Programme for Development (UNDP). The main goal of this organisation is to foster a "green economy" based on the preservation of the environment, use of renewable energies and the reduction of green house gas emissions.
The "R20" is currently chaired by Michèle Sabban, President of the Assembly of European Regions (AER).
