Santa Cruz da Graciosa ,  July 15, 2015

Amount of packaging waste recovered by Graciosa Waste Processing Centre is the highest of Portugal

The Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Environment revealed in Santa Cruz that the amount of packaging waste recovered by Graciosa Waste Processing Centre reached 45.4 kilograms per capita in the first six months of this year, leading the national ranking of the Green Dot Society (Sociedade Ponto Verde).

Luís Neto Viveiros spoke Tuesday on the sidelines of a visit to one of the two open dumps where sealing works are in progress, a public investment over one million Euros. In this regard, the government official considered that these interventions are part of a "silent revolution" in terms of waste management in the Azores.

For Neto Viveiros, it is "possible to eliminate the environmental liabilities" that were accumulated over the years with the construction and entry into operation of the Waste Processing Centres on seven of the nine islands of the archipelago.

The political choices made by the Government of the Azores on waste management are intended to reduce landfills to a minimum as well as to carry out interventions in order to seal dumps and landfills and to promote their environmental rehabilitation.

In this context, and according to the Regional Public Works Charter, there are two ongoing contract works for the sealing of two dumps on Graciosa Island and two in the island of Flores; the latter also represents an investment over one million Euros.
