The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea attended today the hoisting ceremony of the Eco-School Award at São Roque do Pico Basic Education and Secondary School. For the 11th consecutive year, this school has been distinguished with this award for their good environmental practices since the year it began to participate in this initiative.
Álamo Meneses conveyed his satisfaction and gratitude for the work and effort of students, teachers and the entire school community, stressing the importance of good environmental practices in a school context, whose example also covers families and the community in general.
This year, there were 95 registrations in the Eco-School programme, the same number of schools registered in the previous year. It is expected that by the end of the deadline for the registration and submission of the action plan, 29 February, these figures will further increase, demonstrating that, despite the current difficulties, educational institutions and coordinating teachers continue to award priority status to quality and good environmental performance.
The Government of the Azores, through the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and the Sea, and the Regional Network of "Ecotecas" (Environmental Awareness Raising Centres) have been promoting and supporting environmental education programmes at schools in the context of the environmental education strategy defined by the Regional Plan for Environmental Education and Awareness Raising - PRESAA.
