The Regional Secretary for the Environment and the Sea urged São Mateus da Calheta fishers on Friday for the need to keep the sea free from waste during their fishing activities.
Álamo Meneses and the Regional Under Secretary of Fishing, Marcelo Pamplona, accompanied the environmental awareness raising action developed by students from São Mateus da Calheta Elementary School and Kindergarten among the fishing community. The Regional Secretary said that fishers should always bring back with them the materials used they used at sea.
Furthermore, the government official stressed that the environmental awareness campaign, which includes the delivery of flyers from that village in Angra do Heroísmo, is intended to reduce floating materials, such as plastic debris, which can be found on the surface of the sea.
The Regional Secretary also underlined that this campaign, organised under the "Eco-Escolas" (Eco-School) and "Eco-Freguesias" (Eco-Villages) programmes, was developed by that school which was also responsible for the logistics, poster designing and the delivery of flyers to fishers.
Álamo Meneses considered that maintaining coastal areas and the sea free from waste is the responsibility of all. Hence, we are ensuring an adequate environmental protection.
