In the context of the initiatives promoted for the discussion of a National Strategy for the Sea, the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources promotes a debate at the Auditorium of Faial Botanical Garden on Thursday.
The public session starts at 6 PM and will be chaired by the Regional Secretary for Natural Resources, Luís Neto Viveiros. The event will be attended by the Captain of Horta Port, Jorge Chícharo, the Director of the Department of Oceanography and Fisheries of the University of the Azores, Hélder Silva, and the President of Clube Naval da Horta, José Decq Mota.
The National Strategy for the Sea is the proposal for the creation of a public policy tool that presents Portugal's perspective for the period 2013-2020 regarding the development model based on the preservation and sustainable use of resources and services of marine ecosystems. This strategy is directed at a path of smart, sustainable and inclusive economic growth in the long-term, based on a maritime component.
The implementation and results of this multi-sectoral and cross-cutting policy is dependent on the involvement of public and private agents, hence their participation is important for the creation of this Strategy and the defence of the Azores' interests in Sea management.
Accordingly, the Regional Secretariat for Natural Resources, through the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs, has already promoted various debate sessions on the islands of Pico, São Jorge, Graciosa and Santa Maria.
After the session scheduled for Thursday on Faial, the next debate will be held on Friday at the Angra do Heroísmo Cultural and Congress Centre on the island of Terceira at 6:30 PM.
The documents on the proposal for the National Strategy for the Sea are available on the internet portal of the Regional Government on the page of the Regional Directorate for Sea Affairs (http://mar.srrn.azores.gov.pt); public consultation ends on May 31.
