Rehabilitation of illegal dump on S. Miguel allowed planting of over 350 endemic plant specimens
The Regional Secretariat for Agriculture and Environment promoted today another cleaning action and afforestation action in the context of the rehabilitation of the forest area known as "Matinho sem Dono," located in the village of Santa Bárbara, from where more than 30 tonnes of waste were already removed. Under this initiative, a total of 357 endemic plant specimens were planted in this area.
Included in a project that started in 2011, this action allowed the planting of 107 Azorean laurel and Picconia Azorica specimens. It involved forest guards from Ponta Delgada Forest Services and nearly twenty youngsters, designated as "Eco-Guardians," who attend the Quinta do Norte of Norte Crescente Association.
This initiative also includes a programme for the promotion of awareness-raising actions, either individually or in partnership, by the Regional Directorate for Forest Resources. These actions are intended to stress the importance of changing behaviour and attitudes, volunteering and the promotion of biodiversity; they are organised in partnership with regional school establishments.
In the context of the Career Guidance Workshop, held under the title "Visto a camisola de...," the Flores Basic Education and Secondary School students visited the premises of the local Forest Services in order to become acquainted with its history and the duties performed by senior technicians, forest rangers, technical and operational assistants.
