Angra do Heroísmo Museum closes concert cycle "Baroque Masterpieces for Keyboard Instruments"
The Regional Directorate for Culture, through the Angra do Heroísmo Museum, closes the concert cycle "Baroque Masterpieces for Keyboard Instruments" next Sunday, October 29, at 6 PM.
In this concert, the resident organist, conductor Gustaaf van Manen, will perform pieces for harpsichord and organ by Jean-Philippe Rameau, Georg Böhm and Gottlieb Muffat at the choir of the Nossa Senhora da Guia Church, adjacent to the São Francisco Building.
The public will have the opportunity to appreciate the ambience of the choir area of this church, which, in addition to richly embellished chairs, features a remarkable tile panel dating back from the 18th century that illustrates the life of the patron saint of São Francisco Convent. Admission to concert is free.
This concert cycle highlights the unique sound properties of the historical organ of Nossa Senhora da Guia Church, which was made in the 18th century by one of the greatest Portuguese organ masters, António Xavier Machado e Cerveira. It began on February 24 with a session dedicated to composers Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Johann Jakob Froberger, followed by a concert held under the European Heritage Days 2017; the latter featured selected works by Zipoli and Pachelbel.
