Angra do Heroísmo Museum joins celebrations of European Heritage Days

The Angra do Heroísmo Museum joins the celebrations of the European Heritage Days 2015 by promoting the 3rd edition of "Inside the Museum," which will focus on a tobacco distributor wagon belonging to the former Fábrica de Tabaco Estrela (tobacco factory).

The opening of this showcase, which will be open until January 31, 2016 at the IV moment of "From the Sea and Land...a story in the Atlantic" exhibition will be complemented by the delivery of a paper by Francisco Maduro-Dias titled "The simplicity of knowledge." The event will be held September 26 at 3 PM.

The speaker proposes a close eye on that horse-drawn vehicle, belonging to the Transport collection of the Angra do Heroísmo Museum. It represents a blend of tradition, inventiveness and technical knowledge, linking details of the equipment and need to respond to a gentle climate, such as the Azores, at a time when the tobacco industry was flourishing.

With the "Inside the Museum" initiative, the Angra do Heroísmo Museum aims to call the attention of the local community, providing it with information in the context of history, art, religion as well as in science and technology. It features the showcase and comments on pieces from the museum's collection or borrowed from external entities.

This event takes place under the European Heritage Days, an annual initiative promoted by the Council of Europe and the European Union that involves about 50 countries. It is primarily focused on raising awareness for the importance of heritage preservation.
In Portugal, the General-Directorate of Cultural Heritage is the entity responsible for the coordination this initiative.

The theme proposed for 2015 - Industrial and Technical Heritage - brings us to a wide range of our heritage that was ever present in our everyday life, which is a testimony of the skill and creativity of past generations.

The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
