"Azores Culture" Portal disseminates Ethnographic-Linguistic Atlas of the Azores (ALEAç)
The Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, has just made available new contents on the "Azores Culture" Portal, Azores Knowledge Centre, under the title "Ethnographic-Linguistic Atlas of the Azores."
The Atlas is the result of the work carried out by the Study Group of Dialectology at Centre of Linguistics of the University of Lisbon, being currently composed by researchers Gabriela Vitorino, João Saramago and Luísa Segura; it consists of a collection of linguistic information that was conducted in the Azores in the years 1979, 1981, 1995 and 1996. The geographical discontinuity of the Azores, compared to the remaining Portuguese territory, and their linguistic specificity have led to the creation of an independent project from the Ethnographic-Linguistic Atlas of Portugal and Galicia (ALEPG), which is the "Ethnographic-Linguistic Atlas of the Azores" (ALEAç).
The preparation and publication of the "Ethnographic-Linguistic Atlas of the Azores" are the result of the signing of a protocol between the then Regional Directorate for Cultural Affairs and the Centre of Linguistics at the University of Lisbon in 1997.
The first volume was published in 2001 by the Regional Directorate for Culture and the Culture and Linguistics at the University of Lisbon.
In 2005, the Regional Directorate and the aforementioned research Centre have coordinated efforts to provide the complete works on the online platform - the Azores Knowledge Centre. To achieve this goal it was necessary to adjust the contents and introduce them into a database with the purpose of making search easier.
This atlas consists of 1174 linguistic maps as well as various lexical, morfophonological and ethnographic notes, which mainly cover several semantic areas such as: Livestock; Vine and Wine; Agriculture and Agricultural Tools; Fruit Trees; Marine Fauna and Flora, among others.
The Ethnographic-Linguistic Atlas of the Azores is available on the “Azores Culture” portal: http://www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt
