Following the entry into force of the legislation (Ordinance 80/2012 of July 13) regulating the legal scheme on the safeguarding of the Azores cultural and intangible heritage (Regional Legislative Decree 21/2011/A of July 4), the electronic platform - www.matrizpciacores.azores.gov.pt - is available at the "Cultura-Açores" portal. The platform is intended to support the inventory process of the Regional Cultural Intangible Heritage with the possibility of accepting inventory initiatives submitted by any private, public, individual or collective entity.
Developed in the spirit of the 2003 UNESCO Convention, the database that will contain the regional inventory, registering the cultural manifestations and the dynamics of society, is the result of an adaptation of national legislation to the specificities of the archipelago. The electronic platform is based on the Information System "Matriz-PCI" which is also the functional model for the national inventory. In fact, this is the most relevant safeguard measures defended by the new legal scheme; however it is not the only aspect of the structural policy for intangible heritage in the Region.
For the Regional Director for Culture, Jorge Paulus Bruno, " apart from the implementation of the regional inventory, the new approach to the issues related to cultural intangible heritage also bring a new perspective on the renovated role of the Regional Network of Museums, their respective collections and the dynamics of their areas of influence. There is a clear need to contextualise the existing collections, taking into account the concept of "associated heritage" and it becomes more evident the need for implementing a record policy focused on the spontaneous evolution of popular culture manifestations."
Furthermore, Jorge Bruno considers that "the Azores are a region with rich intangible popular culture manifestations, either in diversity and social significance. With the legal and operational tools implemented or about to be put into operation, the Region will be able to keep up with what is happening all over the world in the spirit of the 2003 UNESCO Convention."
