The Regional Director of Culture stressed today the importance of discussing bullfighting, not only with regard to shows, but also to all aspects related to this tradition.
Jorge Bruno spoke at the opening session of the 2nd World Forum on Bullfighting Culture which he presided over on behalf of the President of the Government. This three-day event is organised by the Terceira Bullfighting Club (TTT) which brings together experts and "aficionados" from 10 countries to Terceira.
After pointing out that this meeting - already in its second edition - begins "to consolidate its presence in the calendar of conference tourism and expert meetings events, which the Government has been stimulating and supporting," the Regional Director said that bullfighting, "as an expression of Portuguese culture, is an important tradition in the Azores, especially on the island of Terceira," where it has been a "centuries-old" tradition.
George Bruno praised the "commitment" of TTT in finding "its own qualified space, not only with regard to bullfight shows, but also to the analysis and knowledge on this cultural phenomenon of anthropological nature in the context of what is designated today as intangible cultural heritage.”
The Regional Director also praised the themes chosen for discussion, including the dissemination and debate of all aspects related to the bullfighting culture, which "cannot cease to exist in our contemporary society and must comply with national and regional regulations."
