Documentaries on Azorean cultural intangible heritage at "Outono Vivo” and DocLisboa - 2012
The exhibition of two documentaries about Azorean cultural intangible heritage will take place at the Ramo Grande Auditorium under the programme of "Outono-Vivo 2012" (Autumn Alive), an initiative promoted by the Praia da Vitória City Hall from October 26 to November 4. The documentaries were produced by regional cultural associations and funded by the Regional Directorate for Culture.
The documentary on Pico and Faial "chamarritas" (traditional Azorean dances) - "Não me importava morrer se houvesse guitarras no céu" (I wouldn't mind dying if there were guitars in heaven) will be exhibited on Sunday, October 28, at 3:30 PM. The work will be presented at a public session, with free admission, which will be attended by the documentary's director, Tiago Pereira, and Carla Dâmaso, representative of the documentary producer, Música Vadia Cultural Association, headquartered in the city of Horta.
In turn, the documentary on Terceira's popular theatre, "Montar a Tenda" (Assembling the Tent) will be exhibited at a free admission session on Thursday, November 1, at 5:30 PM. This work depicts the backstage of Terceira's popular dances, with special emphasis on traditional “Sword Dances.” The event will be attended by the documentary's director, Montserrat Ciges, researcher at the Department of History of the University of the Azores and Tiago Melo Bento, who was in charge for recording the audio and image material for the documentary and who is also the representative of the documentary producer, O Corredor Cultural Association, based in Ponta Delgada.
Premiered in Lages do Pico and exhibited in Horta and Lisbon in June this year, the documentary by Tiago Pereira on Chamarritas is, once again, disseminated outside the Region with its inclusion in the programme of the 10th edition of the international film festival "DocLisboa," with screenings at "São Jorge” and “Londres” cinemas on October 22 at 9:30 PM and on October 25 at 4:45 PM, respectively.
Both documentaries were funded by the Regional Directorate for Culture in the context of the regional policy for the defence of spontaneous popular culture manifestations and the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in the Azores, In this regard, the Regional Director for Culture, Jorge Paulus Bruno, explained the main guidelines of the work carried out in this area:
"In addition to the creation of a computer platform “MatrizPCI-Azores” to support the inventory of regional cultural heritage, the new approach to the issues related to cultural intangible heritage also brings a new perspective on the renovated role of the Regional Network of Museums, either on their respective collections or on the dynamics of their areas of influence. There is a clear need to contextualise the existing collections, taking into account the concept of "associated heritage" and, in this context, it becomes more evident the need for implementing a record policy focused on the spontaneous evolution of popular culture manifestations."
