The Regional Directorate for Culture, through Pico Museum, opens Monday, July 24, the exhibition titled "Mestre José Melo - a man ahead of his time" at the Whaling Industry Museum at 9:30 PM. It consists of a biographical and documentary work on this shipbuilder from Santo Amaro do Pico.
The exhibition aims to show the life and work of Mestre José Silva Melo, one of the most prestigious shipbuilders of the Azores, who developed his activity as a designer and shipbuilder on Pico, on several islands of the archipelago and in the USA. His work is recognised by companies, universities and specialised public.
Mestre José Melo is an indisputable reference in the shipbuilding industry of Pico for the quantity and quality of his work. This island was a major production centre of wooden boats in the Azores, being the village of Santo Amaro recognised as the true shipbuilding sanctuary of the archipelago.
In this context, the Pico Museum revisits and pays tribute to the life and work of Mestre José Melo, now 85, who lives with his family in the USA.
The exhibition will be open until October 1 during the regular opening hours of the Museum, from Tuesday to Sunday between 10 AM and 5:30 PM.
The Regional Directorate for Culture informs that this and other events may be consulted in the Cultural Agenda of the CulturAçores Portal at the following address: www.culturacores.azores.gov.pt.
