Angra do Heroísmo ,  August 29, 2012

Premiere of documentary "Montar a Tenda" on Terceira's popular theatre

In a joint initiative of the Presidency of the Regional Government of the Azores, through the Regional Directorate for Culture, and the "O Corredor Cultural Association," the documentary on Terceira's popular theatre, "Montar a Tenda" (Assembling the Tent), will premiere at the Ramo Grande Auditorium in Praia da Vitória next Sunday, September 2, at 9 PM. The documentary was directed by Montserrat Ciges.

The public session, with free admission, will be attended by the Regional Director for Culture Jorge Paulus Bruno, who will emphasise the importance of this work in the context of the ongoing initiatives in the field of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

"The documentary by Montserrat Ciges on the backstage of Terceira Carnival depicts a series of genuine cultural manifestations in the field of popular theatre, thus contributing to the preservation of a spontaneous cultural manifestation so popular among us. This is a project that was timely funded by the Regional Directorate for Culture in the context of the regional policy for the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage of the Azores, whose legislation has already been approved.

In addition to supporting the recordings of the evolution of the popular culture phenomena, such as the case of this documentary, the guidelines of the regional policy for intangible heritage also provide the gradual creation of an inventory, whose electronic support platform is available online on the Azores Culture Portal since August 29. The new legislation brings a new perspective on the renovated role of museums, their respective collections and the dynamics of their areas of influence.

Apart from Jorge Paulus Bruno, the premiere will also be attended by the documentary's director, a researcher at the History Department of the University of the Azores who captured the images displayed during the 2012 Carnival. The work focuses on the spontaneous dynamics on the backstage and the preparation of traditional “Sword Dances.”
